Solving an Escape Room Before Time Runs Out

Escape rooms come with all sorts of different puzzles, themes, and experiences. However, no matter where or when you play there is one thing that is the same. The time limit! You and your team only have a set amount of time to solve the room and escape. Usually only an hour is allowed which means that you need to make the most of your time to make sure you’re able to make it out before the clock runs out. Here are some strategies to help you out.

Think Out Loud

You’ll hear this repeated in multiple strategies. Communication is the key to solving escape rooms and one of the best ways to do that is by thinking out loud. This lets everyone in the room know what is happening like what or where things have been discovered. It can also help teams out down the road because someone can always go back and reference it later on. For example, the lock may not be relevant right now but will be 5 puzzles into the game.

Stay Organized

There are a lot of objects and clues to look through when you enter an escape room. A good strategy is to have a designated space for everything that you have already found. If you find something that piques your interest, call it out and then place it in the designated spot so that you aren’t scrambling to remember where it is later on.

Divide Up Responsibilities

Everyone is good at something, and you should take advantage of that. You can’t have everyone on your team searching for clues without anyone to solve. Before you go into your game, divide the group up into different roles such as those who search, those who seek, those who facilitate, etc. This allows everyone to play to their strengths and helps the team move more efficiently.

Listen to the Game Master and the Intro Video

The game master is the expert here and they have seen thousands of people come through the escape rooms. They are familiar with the puzzles as well as the general way that people go about solving. They might include subtle hints in what they tell you before you go into the room. The video that is shown can also be helpful with any clues that show up later on. Take all the information in and use it to your advantage. And, if your game master speaks up during the game, make sure to pay extra attention. They can save you time running around in circles.
